Argentina Expands List of Controlled Narcotic Substances

Buenos Aires, March 4 (NA) – The Ministry of Security updated the list of narcotic and psychotropic substances subject to criminal penalties.

Through Decree 122/2026, published in the Official Gazette, new substances were established as narcotics under Law 23.737 to strengthen the fight against drug trafficking and avoid legal loopholes that could be exploited by criminal organizations.

According to the Argentine News Agency, 254 new substances were added to the list, constituting the most extensive update in the history of the Argentine system for penal control of narcotics.

In the last two years, 424 substances have been added, and the current list reaches a total of 886 under criminal control, of which 47.8% were incorporated during the current administration.

What types of substances are added to the list of narcotics

Among the new additions are nitazenes and fentanyl analogs, synthetic opioids of extremely high potency, whose early control is essential to prevent scenarios of high lethality associated with massive overdoses.

Global growth of psychoactive substances

The update responds to the exponential growth of new psychoactive substances worldwide.

According to data from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), in 2024 alone, 101 new psychoactive substances (NPS) were identified globally for the first time. This phenomenon requires periodic reviews to anticipate the chemical innovation of drug trafficking, they stated from the Security portfolio.
